The Isle of Skye, the largest of the Inner Hebrides, is located off the west coast of mainland Scotland. From a mountainous centre, dominated by the Cuillins range, the island’s peninsulas radiate into the Atlantic Ocean. Skye fully deserves the title “prime photography location” owing to its rich diversity of landscapes spread over a relatively small area.
On this 5-day tour, you’ll discover dramatic coastlines, idyllic lighthouses, iconic beaches, towering mountain peaks, rolling hills, striking lochs, and thundering waterfalls. But Skye offers much more than pretty postcard motives. The island provides countless photographic opportunities in an untouched nature. Landscapes ranging from abstract, almost “architectural”, over rough, majestic, contemplative, stunningly beautiful to “classical” – Skye’s natural beauty features them all. The Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Stream influence the weather, which is reflected in the island’s mild oceanic climate. The sky is a more than photogenic backdrop; from moody, over broody to clear blue skies, studded with picturesque fleecy cumulus clouds.
The elegant Skye Bridge, connecting the island to the mainland over Loch Alsh, was opened in 1995. Access by road is now fast and easy, but Skye nevertheless remains sparsely populated – a precious asset for nature lovers.
No matter what your photographic experience and expectations are, you’ll find numerous possibilities to expand and work on your composition skills, and you’ll have ample time to exchange views and tips in a small group environment.
We will be based in a comfortable hotel in Portree. Located roughly in the centre of Skye, the island’s largest town is the perfect starting point for daily excursions into all cardinal directions. A minibus will take us to our shooting locations, which are in short to medium walking distance. The terrain can be rough, but a reasonable degree of fitness is all you need.
I’ve spent many weeks, at different seasons, exploring Skye and scouting the perfect locations. Up and down large and narrow winding roads, over hill and dale – I know the island like the back of my hand and look forward to sharing my favourite spots with you.
